راغباً في تشجيعها، ومن دون أي سوء نية، قال ناقد لفتاة من شتوتغارت، ترسم لوحات جميلة في أول معارضها: "إن ما تقومين به موهوب ولافت للنظر، لكن عندك القليل جداً من العمق".
لم تفهم الفتاة ما يعنيه الناقد، وفي الحال نسيت ملاحظته. لكن بعد يومين، نشرت الجريدة لقاءً مع الناقد نفسه جاء فيه: "تملك الفنانة الشابة الكثير من الموهبة وتثير أعمالها الإعجاب من النظرة الأولى، لكنها للأسف تفتقر إلى العمق".
بدأت الفتاة بالتفكير. تأملت في رسوماتها. نقبت في محافظ لوحاتها القديمة. تأملت جميع رسوماتها السابقة والرسومات التي تعمل عليها. ثم سدت زجاجات الحبر الصيني. غسلت الفراشي وذهبت كي تتمشى.
في المساء نفسه دعيت إلى حفل. كان الجميع قد حفظ النقد عن ظهر قلب وكرروا الحديث عن الموهبة الكبيرة والإعجاب الشديد اللذين تثيرهما اللوحات من النظرة الأولى. لكن الفتاة تمكنت أن تلتقط من خلفية الدمدمة ومن أولئك الذين تقف وراءهم، إذ أصاخت السمع: "ليس عندها عمق. هذا بالضبط ما ينقصها. هي ليست سيئة، لكن للأسف ليس لديها عمق".
طوال الأسبوع التالي، لم ترسم الفتاة شيئاً. جلست صامتة في شقتها. أمعنت التفكير وجالت برأسها فكرة واحدة فقط، حاصرت أفكارها الأخرى مثل أخطبوط الأعماق وبلعتها: "لماذا ليس لدي عمق؟".
ماذا كان السؤال؟ نعم، نعم، طيب، طيب. ما هو الكتاب الذي أثر فيّ، طبعني بطابعه، دمغني بدمغته، هزني من الأعماق، الكتاب الذي "حدد خط حياتي" أو الذي "أخرجني من مساري".
