عشية الاضطرابات التي هزّت فرنسا في أيار 1968، شعرت دانيال، وهي امرأة شابة في الثلاثين من عمرها تمتهن التدريس في احدى الليسيات، شعرت بأنها تحب أحد طلابها، جيرار الذي كان قد أصبح في نظرها رجلاً، ولكنه قاصر في نظر القانون. وبادلها الطالب الحب. ونفتح ربيع الحرية ذلك العام تحت الأعلام الحمراء والسوداء، وأراد الأطفال أن يكونوا راشدين، وعاد الراشدون أطفالاً. وكان ذلك، بالنسبة لدانيال وجيرار، انبثاق حب مصمم على تحطيم جميع الحواجز. ثم انتكست الحرية. وبقي العاشقان وحدهما: إن الآخرين، مؤيدي النظام ومؤيدي الثورة، الموظفين والمكافحين، يعودون الى الضوابط ويقومون بحساباتهم الصغيرة. أما جيرار ودانيال فيمثلان، في نظر الجميع، "الفضيحة" لأنهما يرفضان أن يعودا الى الصف، ولأنهما يريدان أن يستمرا بأن يكونا حرّين مالكين لقدرهما. ويجري الانقضاض عليهما من كل مكان، ويتحالف والد جيرار، المناضل، مع خادمي الدولة، من قضاة وشرطة وعلماء نفس قمعيين، ليعيدوا العاشقين الى "العقل". ويظل دانيال وجيرار مصممين على المضي في معركتهما الى النهاية. ولكن هل تستطيع دانيال، تلك الرفيعة النفس المثالية النزعة، أن تحتمل اكتشاف الغباوة والشر البشريين بكل اتساعهما؟ هل تحتمل هذا النظام الذي يحكمه التطهريون من كل اتجاه والذي يسحق حياتها، ويسحق الحياة كلها؟ هذا ما تصوره هذه الرواية الرائعة التي أخرجها اندريه خياط فيلماً يطوف الآن أنحاء العالم ويشاهد إقبالاً عظيماً ينافس إقبال المشاهدين على فيلم "قصة حب"...
