إن دراسة موضوع أكثر حساسية، مثل السلطة بين المدينة والقرية بطريقة أنثروبولوجية، يتطلب وقفة نقدية للدراسات في مجال الإنثروبولوجيا السياسية، تلك الدراسات التي ظهرت بطريقة منهجية مع منتصف القرن العشرين، لتؤشر على أن ظهور مثل هذه الدراسة كانت متأخرة عن باقي فروع الإنثروبولوجيا الأخرى، وربما يعود السبب إلى إنشغال الإنثروبولوجين الأوائل بدراسة المجتمعات البدائية والتركيز على بعض العادات والتقاليد والرموز وممارسة الحياة بطريقة تثير إهتمام الإنثروبلوجيين، لأن ذلك يمثل حالة بدائية تعكس وضعاً متأخراً، وإن المجتمعات البدائية التي دُرست في القرن التاسع عشر كانت تمثل حالة متخلفة عما أنجزه العقل الأوروبي، وما يّمكن هذا العقل من حالة متقدمة على غيره.
لذا كانت أبرز الإنتقادات التي وجهت إلى النظرية التطورية الإنثروبولوجية الكلاسيكية، هو تحيزها إلى العنصر الأبيض، فكانت النظرية البنائية الوظيفية أولى النظريات التي وجهت لمثل هذه الإنتقادات، وكان منطقوها يتكون من أنساق عديدة متساندة مع بعضها لتشكل حالة (إستاتيكية) متمثلة في أطرها المرفولوجية، سواء على مستوى مرفولوجية الأسرة أم المجتمع، كذلك تشكل حالة متغيرة (ديناميكية) متمثلة بتغيير العلاقات الإجتماعية والنظم الثقافية والعادات والتقاليد وغيرها، وقد كانت من بين الأنساق المهمة التي اهتم بدراستها منذ منتصف القرن العشرين النسق السياسي، إذ كانت جهود إيفانز برتشارد) مميزة في هذا المجال، وقد ظهر هذا الإهتمام في إعداده للدراسات التي تكلمت عن النظم السياسية الإفريقية، ويمكن القول: إن الإنثروبولوجيا لم تهمل الجانب السياسي.
