تطل علينا "الحوليات" كوثيقة تاريخية تمدنا بالكثير عن تلك الحقبة التاريخية الإسلامية، والواقعة ما بين العام الرابع والثلاثين بعد الثمانمائة والعام التاسع والثلاثين من نفس القرن، فتتناول تلك الحوليات الدمشقية أحوال الأمة الإسلامية في تلك الفترة وخاصة الأحوال الشامية والدمشقية منها، وهى لذلك تعد وثيقة تاريخية هامة نجد في طياتها الكثير من أحداث ذلك الزمان، على الرغم من عدم معرفة مؤلفها.. وإن كان قد قدم الدكتور "حسن حبشي" تصورا وتحليلا موضوعيا لتلك النقطة، أودعه في مقدمة الكتاب وذلك ردا على نسبتها لـ "شمس الدين محمد بن عبد الرحمن السخاوي" " المؤرخ المصري"، وكذلك محاولة للوصول إلى هوية صاحبها.
