سويدُ شاعرٌ مخضرمٌ من المعمّرين؛ حيث شهد عهوداً ثلاثة، امتدّت من الجاهلية، فصدرِ الإسلام، وانتهت بحدود عام 60 ستين للهجرة.
إلا انَّه كان من الشعراء المقلّين، ما أدّى إلى أن تضيعَ أخبارُه، وتقلَّ مصادرُ دراسته، ولكنَّ سويداً أرغم التاريخ على ان يحفظَ له ذكراً حَسَناً في بعض مظانّه، وذلك بقصيدتِهِ العينيّة، التي احتفظت - لرصانتها ورشاقة ألفاظها وما احتوته - بشهرة واسعة، وبسمعة حسنة. حيث فضلها الأصمعيُّ، وقال: (كانتِ العربُ في الجاهليّة تفضّلها وتُقدّمُها وتَعُدُّها من حِكَمِها، وإنِها كانت في الجاهليّة تُسمّى باليتيمة).
