تتناول الرواية، التي تروى على لسان البطلة سلمى، التحولات التي تعيشها أسرة لبنانية مؤلفة من الأب والأم والأخوين والأخوات الثلاث بعد ارتحالها إلى إحدى دول الخليج ليجتمع شملها مع الأب الذي يعمل هناك. ورغم السعادة التي تشعر بها الأسرة في البداية والحب الذي يغمرها به الأب، فإنها تواجه أول مشكلة تتمثل بتحول البنت الكبرى سارة إلى مرحلة المراهقة والنضوج الجسدي المبكر المصحوب بجمال "يسلب العقول بجاذبيته"، الأمر الذي يجعل الأب مذعوراً خوفاً من اقتراب الوحوش إليها وافتراسها، فيضطر إلى إيجاد حل سريع قبل أن تخرج الأمور عن سيطرته وذلك بتزويجها وهي في سن السادسة عشرة إلى لبناني يدعى سامي يعمل محاسباً في إحدى الشركات، ويكبرها بأربعة عشر عاماً. ويقترح الأب على العريس أن يقيم معهم ليتمكن من توفير راتبه كاملاً لشراء منزل في بيروت، وبعد عدة سنوات يسيطر سامي على البيت، ويسفر عن حقيقته ودناءته، فيتحرش جنسياً بأخت زوجته الأصغر منها (بطلة الرواية) التي لا يزيد عمرها عن خمسة عشر عاما. وتمضي الرواية في سرد الصراع النفسي الذي تعاني منه سلمى من جراء ذلك، واستمرار سامي في سلوكه الدنيء معها حتى بعد التحاقها إلى الجامعة.
تكشف الرواية، وهي الأولى لرولا البلبيسي، عن جرأة واضحة في سبر أغوار العلاقات الاجتماعية المتشابكة من خلال بوح أنثوي شفيف أحيانا ومتوتر أحياناً أخرى.
