«سلمى» العنوان الروائي الأول للكاتبة السعودية حليم الفرجي تتناول خلاله القيم المتحولة للمجتمع في منطقة جازان في النصف الأول من القرن العشرين، وما يتعلق بذلك من الوعي بقضايا المجتمع المحلي (تقاليده وعاداته الموروثة ومعتقداته)، فضلاً عن إفرادها حيزاً مستقلاً للذات الأنثوية وفضائها الخاص.
و"سلمى" هي فتاة في عمر الزهور تتميز بجمالٍ جعلها محط اهتمام الجميع؛ تعيش مع أسرتها الفقيرة في قريةٍ صغيرةٍ يسكنُ أهلها (العشش) حتى وقت قريب وتحكم أهلها عاداتٍ وتقاليدٍ لا يجوز الخروج عنها. وافق الجدّ والأب على تعليمها وأخواتها الثلاث بعد إصرار الأم على ذلك، وعندما كبرت جاءت لخطبتها نساء القرية وليعقد قرانها على "حسن" الذي رأت فيه فارس أحلامها. تترك المدرسة وتنتقل لتعيش الحياة الزوجية وسؤال يلح عليها: لماذا كانت أختها الكبرى "فاطمة" حزينة لزواجها؟، ولماذا تزوجت من ابن عمها "محمد" على الرغم من كونها لا تحبه؟ ليتبين لاحقاً وبعد أن طُلقت سلمى من زوجها لسوء معاملته لها، أن فاطمةً وحسن كانا على علاقة حب عرفت بها القرية وحتى لا تُقتل فاطمة أسرع الأهل بتزويجه من أختها وكان ذلك بناءً على رغبته هو فقد كان رجلاً لعوباً أحب فاطمة وطلب من أمه أن تخطب سلمى.
بعد الطلاق تعود سلمى إلى بيت العائلة وتحاول بناء نفسها من جديد، تتابع تعليمها حتى المرحلة الجامعية فتتوفق على أقرانها وتصبح معيدة في الجامعة. وبعد فترة يستيقظ ضمير "حسن" فجأة ليقول لها أنه لا يستحقها فكان جوابها: "كنت اضحك.. كنت أضحك بهستيرية .. سلمى أنا لم استطع مسامحة نفسي على.. أقفلت الخط.. لا مزيد من الضعف.. كفى، لقد وجدت نفسي أخيراً، ولن أضيعها مرة أخرى".
