هذا الكتاب هو نظر في موضوع الدين بما هو نظر فلسفي، ومن هذه الجهة لا فرق بينه وبين سائر موضوعات الفلسفة الأخرى، وبذلك يكون هذا الموضوع مشتركاً إنسانياً أيضاً، ما يعني أنه ليس خاصاً بالفكر الغربي وحده على الرغم من كونه وليد التاريخ الثقافي للغرب.
فالفلسفة، على الرغم من أنها إغريقية المولد والنشأة، لا أحد يدعي اليوم أنها شأن ثقافي خاص بالشعب اليوناني.
ليس المقصود بفلسفة الدين دراسة موضوع دين بعينه أو عقيدة محددة، وإنما هي نظر في تجليات التعالي وتمظهرات القداسة بصرف النظر عن الملابسات التي تشكلت فيها، فتجربة التعالي ليست حكراً على أمة أو شعب، والعلاقة مع القدس ليست مشروطة بحقبة خاصة ولا بمجال محدد.
تُظهر لنا فلسفة الدين أن ما نحسبه خصوصية تجعلنا بلا نظير ولا مثيل هو في الواقع كونية ومشترك إنساني.
الحكمة الدينية الموجودة في كتابنا يوجد لها مثيل لدى أنبياء العهد القديم، وما قاله هؤلاء يوجد له نظير عند حكماء بابل ومصر.
ليس لدينا ما نباهي به غيرنا في مجال المعتقد، كما ليس لدى الغير ما قد يجعله متفوقاً علينا، نحن سواسية في المعتقد، ما دمنا ننهل جميعاً من تراث بشري توغل في القدم.
