يمكن النظر إلى علاقة ابن رشد بأرسطو بإعتبارها علاقة متأججة، تميزت بثورة التلميذ على أستاذه، إلا أن تلك الثورة لم تكن وجهاً لوجه، بل عبرت عن نفسها بنفس الصيغة التي اتخذتها علاقة أرسطو بأستاذه أفلاطون.
فأرسطو عندما انتقد النظرية المثل لم يكن الهدف هو طرح بديل عنها، بل كان الهدف هو تقويمها وتطويرها وتخليصها من الشوائب التي أضافها الفلاسفة الأفلاطونيون، أليس هذا هو مشروع ابن رشد أيضاً في علاقته بأرسطو؟ ألم يعلن مراراً أن مشروعه يكمن في تخليص الأرسطية من شوائب المشائين؟ وفي هذا "التقويم" و"التخليص" و"التفسير" و"التفصيل" تكمن الثورة المقصودة...
إلا أن كل هذا لم يمنعه من التعبير عن آرائه الخاصة، والتي اتخذت صيغاً عديدة يصعب تبينها بدقة، فالرجل لم يكن يحب إبراز ذاته بقدر ما كان يبرز حبه للميتافيزيقا، مما جعله ينسب كل شيء إلى الحكيم الأول إلا فيما ندر.
أما إذا وصلت آراؤه إلى حد التناقض مع المعلم الأول، فإنه يشعر بمرارة داخلية تدفعه إلى الوجوم، فيسقط من حسابه مقالة أو قولاً أو فقرة، أو يلتمس تأويلاً آخر، أو يعتذر بلسان أرسطو الذي أجمل المفصل أو لم يذكر هذا الرأي أو ذاك ثم يمر بصمت... ليشق طريقه بصبر وأناة.
وينهي كلامه بتواضع الحكيم، ويقول إنه "يذكرنا" فقط بالإشكالات والشكوك الواردة عند أرسطو؛ لكن "التذكير" هو أيضاً "تجديد"، تشهد لذلك النصوص الكبرى في تاريخ الفكر البشري، ألم تكن الديانات الكبرى "تذكيراً" و"ذكرى"؟! وهل ديانات "التذكير" منعها ذلك من أن تكون في نفس الوقت ديانات "التجديد"؟!.
كذلك هو الشأن بالنسبة للنصوص الفلسفية الكبرى، بعضها يذكر بالبعض الآخر، وحين يذكرنا ابن رشد فهو يرسل إلينا بذلك إشارة لنفهم بأنه ينخرط في سلك الفلاسفة، وحين نقرأ "التجديد" في شروحاته فتلك إشارة أخرى تقول إن الرجل ينخرط في سلك المبدعين، فجدل "التذكير والتجديد" أذن هو الذي يختزل المشروع الرشدي في علاقته بالمشروع الأرسطي.
