تعتبر مرحلة الطفولة من أخطر وأهم المراحل في حياة الإنسان, وفيها تتحدد ملامح وشخصية رجل وأمرأة المستقبل.
وقد يتعرض الطفل لكثير من المشكلات سواء نفسية أو إجتماعية.. ومنها مص الأصابع وقضم الأظافر.
إن مص الأصابع وقضم الأظافر من أكثر العادات التي يمارسها الأطفال في مراحل الطفولة.. حيث إن حوالي 80% من الأطفال الرضع يمصون أصابعهم, وحوالي 60% من الأطفال يقضمون أظافرهم قبل سن العاشرة, وهي من أضطراب العادات والمشكلات السلوكية التي يمارسها بعض الأطفال.. والتي يعتبر فيها أسلوب معاملة الوالدين والآخرين للطفل ذا أثر كبير في تشكيل سلوكه وشخصيته فيما بعد.. وقد يصعب علي الوالدين معرفة السبب الرئيسي لهذه العادة وكيفية القضاء عليها والتي قد تسبب تشوهات بالأظافر والأصابع بالإضافة إلي تلك الأمراض التي قد تنتقل من وراء مص الأصابع وقضم الأظافر.
