يتحدثُ الكتابُ بشكلٍ أساسيٍّ عن الدين بوصفه خطاباً صاغه الفقهاءُ والـمُحدِّثون والمفسرون والرواة والقصاصون وبعضُ علماء الكلام وأصحابُ الفرق الإسلامية. وضمّنوهُ تضميناتٍ إيديولوجيةً غائيةً تقترنُ بالسلطة على نحوٍ مباشرٍ، سواء أكانتْ سلطةً رمزيةً أو سلطةً سياسيةً، تفريقاً له عن الدين الفطريّ المقترن بسلوكٍ فرديٍّ حرٍّ يقرّرُ الإنسانُ فيه شكلَ علاقته بخالقه، والسبلَ الذاتيةَ التي يسلكُها في ذلك. الدينُ، إذن من خلال نظرةٍ على تاريخ الأديان، هو بهذا المعنى خطابٌ إيديولوجيٌّ خالصٌ، يمتلكُ سلطةً في ذاته ويرتبطُ بعلاقةٍ وثيقةٍ بالسلطة السياسية على نحو ما تكشَّفَ عَبْرَ تاريخ الدولة الدينية خلال قرونٍ من الحكم بعد ظهور الإسلام. فالدينُ هو أكثر الإيديولوجيات شدةً وضراوةً ونزوعاً للسيطرة. أما الإيمانُ فهو فعلٌ ذاتيٌّ خالصٌ منزوعٌ من الإيديولوجيا.
