في قصائد الحب والزوال، يبدو الشعر وسيلة للتحرر من الألم، والفقد، والغربة، وهذا هو حال كل الشعراء العراقيين. يعيدون رسم معالم الحياة حتى حين تستحيل الأماني، وتغيب الأحلام، في قسوة الواقع.
يضم الكتاب قصائد في الشعر العربي الحديث للشاعر العراقي "ناظم عودة" توزعت على أربعة أقسام هي: 1 – قصائد الزوال، 2 – حورية الغابات الاسكندنافية، 3 – صلاة أخرى، 4 – مرثى الفقراء.
هي قصائد تنتمي إلى تجارب الشاعر في هذه الحياة، ودائماً من منظور شامل عميق ينطوي على تشابك مرهف بين الصورة ودلالاتها اللغوية العميقة.
تحت عنوان (قتلى الحرب) يقول الشاعر ناظم عودة:
كزهور القرنفل تتساقط بمقصّ البستانيّ، تساقطتْ
رؤوسُ الجنودِ الذين ذهبوا للحربِ ومعهم صورُ
أطفالِهم وحبيباتِهم
حملوا معهم ناياتِ القصبِ وقصائدَ السيابِ
بدلاً من الملابسِ الداخليةِ عبّأوا حقائبهم بالكتبِ
المحظورة
ذهبوا للحربِ بملابسَ مدنيّةٍ يحملونَ معهم المسجلاتِ
وأشرطةَ فيروزَ
كلما سقطَ رأسٌ، اعتدلَ تاجُ الذهب على هامةِ الرئيسِ
كلما سقطتْ زهرةُ القرنفل، سقط قلبُهُ في كهوف الظلامِ (...)".
