شهدت الدراسة العلمية للعلاقات الدولية عدة إتجاهات ساد كل منها مرحلة من مراحل تطور دراستها، وتبلورت التباينات بينها، فإذا كانت صورة "سياسات القوة" قد عكست خبرة النصف الأول من القرن العشرين وحتى العقد السابع منه، فإن خبرة الربع الأخير من القرن الماضي قد أبرزت تغيرات هيكلية في السياسات الدولية ترتب عليها عدم ملاءمة دراستها من خلال منظور "سياسات القوة"، من ثَمَّ ظهرت الحاجة إلى إتساع النظرة التحليلية التي تركِّز على الدول فقط، وعلى مفاهيم القوة والصراع أساساً، نظراً لبروز أدوار لفاعلين جدد من غير الدول، ولبروز أهمية موضوعات جديدة أحدثت تحوّلاً في النظام الدولي المعاصر تحت تأثير قوى الإعتماد المتبادل الدولي، فلقد اقتضت هذه الأوضاع الدولية المتطورة النظر للعالم بإعتباره نظاماً من التفاعلات التي يلعب فيها فاعلون آخرون من غير الدول دوراً مهماً حول موضوعات سياسية وإقتصادية جديدة تخلق عمليات جديدة تتجه بالنظام نحو نوع من التعاون والتكيّف وليس نحو العنف والصراع فقط.
وهكذا، فإن الإتجاهات الحديثة في دراسة العلاقات الدولية تناولت خصائص أساسية للسياسات الدولية المعاصرة من خلال ثلاثة محاور، الفاعلون الدوليون، نطاق وأولوية الموضوعات، العمليات الدولية.
لقد حاول المؤلف في كتابه هذا، الإنطلاق في دراسة العلاقات الدولية، عبر سبعة أبواب، تضمنت عرضاً شاملاً ووافياً لمجمل الأسس المتعلقة بعلم العلاقات الدولية، ففي الباب الأول تم التطرق إلى نشأة العلاقات الدولية ونطاقها وعلاقتها بغيرها من العلوم علاوة على مناهج كتابتها، أما الباب الثاني فقد احتوى على نظريات العلاقات الدولية فتضمن تسعة فصول جمعت أسس النظريات من الواقعية إلى المثالية وما بينهما من مدارس ونظريات وإتجاهات متنوعة.
أما الباب الثالث، فقد خصصه المؤلف إلى أثر التحولات في نظريات الجغرافيا السياسية وأثرها في العلاقات الدولية ونظرياتها، فيما الباب الرابع عالج الأزمات الدولية وطرق وأساليب إدارتها، أما الباب الخامس فقد تضمن نظرية القوة وعلاقتها بالأحلاف الدولية وتوازناتها وصراعاتها، علاوة على التكتلات الدولية في حقبة الحرب الباردة، وما تلاها من فترة وفاق، ثم أنهى المؤلف هذا الباب بتداعيات إنهيار الإتحاد السوفياتي من خلال تفرّد الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية بقيادة النظام العالمي ومستقبل هذه القيادة.
ثم انتقل في الباب السادس إلى الإضاءة على الأشخاص الدولية الفاعلة في العلاقات الدولية كالدول والمنظمات الدولية والإقليمية، والشركات العابرة للقارات والأفراد، ثم أنهى هذا المؤلف بفصل سابع تناول أبرز القضايا الدولية كالعولمة والإرهاب والسيادة والبيئة وحوار الحضارات وحقوق الإنسان والهجرة غير الشرعية ونزع الأسلحة غير التقليدية.
