يتبيّن للناظّر في المعاجم العربية الورقية المتخصصة أنّها تأخذ في عمومها أحد مظهرين، فإمّا أن تأتي في شكل مسارد مُصطلحية (Glossaries) تصنّف وفقها المصطلحات في صورة قوائم مصطلحية ثنائية أو متعددة اللغات، وتمثّل العربية فيها لغة الأصل أو لغة الهدف. وإما أن تتحقق في صورة معاجم تعريفية تشتمل على بنية صغرى تتوفّر على مختلف عناصرها من: ذكر للمجال، إضافة إلى التعريفات والأمثلة، والإحالات وغير ذلك. وتتجلى أهمية المسارد في كونها أداة لحصر المنظومة المصطلحية في مجال علمي معيّن بحيث تشكّل مرجعا يتم من خلاله التأكد من انتماء تسمية مصطلحية ما إلى مجال علمي أو تقني معيّن، كما أنّه تفيد المترجم في العثور على المكافئات المصطلحية للمفاهيم التي يريد نقلها من لغة إلى أخرى، وفضلا على ذلك، فهذه المسارد تفيد في عملية التوحيد المصطلحي، بحيث يُحتكم إليها أحيانا في ترسيم تسمية أو العدول عنها.
