يأتي هذا الكتاب ليميط اللثام عن أبرز إسهامات العلماء العرب القدامى في بناء نظرية خاصّة بالتعريف، نظريةٍ تحاول الإحاطة بجميع قضايا التّعريف وأبعاده فتتناول دلالاته ومفاهيمه ومكوناته، وتبحث في أنواعه، وتعمل على تصنيفها والمُفاضلة بينها، وتستقصي المواقع التي يُستعمل فيها هذا التّعريف أو ذاك، والسبب الكامن وراء ذلك الإختيار، كما تُحاول الإلمام بشروط التعريف وضوابطه، وتسعى إلى تحديد وظائفه والأهداف التي يحقّقها كلُ نوع من أنواعه، وتتعرّض كذلك إلى المُشكلات التي يطرحها التّعريف، فتُنبّه عليها ثمّ تحاول معالجتها بالطّرق المناسبة.
ولقد تبيّن بعد الإطّلاع على كثيرٍ مما أُلِّف في التراث الفكري العربي على إختلاف تخصّصاته ومناهله بأنّ أغلب الموضوعات الخاصّة بالتّعريف قد تم تناولها والتّعمّق فيها، وذلك ضمن بحوث تجلّت في مظهرين: تجسّد الأوّل في شكل مباحث جزئيّة ومُنفصلة، كثيراً ما تلوّنت بصبغة فلسفية، وهي مبثوثة في ثنايا المؤلّفات اللغوية والفلسفية والفقهية والأصولية، وبعض كتب المتصوّفة، وغيرها.
ولقد استوت تلك المباحث، بعد أن تمّ لمّ شتاتها والتوليف بين عناصرها، في صورة نظريّة تتميّز بجانب كبير من الحصافة، أمّا المظهر الثاني فتلخّص في صورة نظريّة في التّعريف اختص بها التّيار الأصولي عامّةً وابن تيمية على وجه التّعيين، هذا العالم الذي لم يكتف بإنكار نظريّة الحدّ الأرسطية، بل انبرى يُقوّض أسسها ومبادئها بالإعتماد على الحجة والدليل، ثمّ قدّم بديلاً معرفياً في شكل نظريّة انحصر فيها مفهوم التّعريف في ما هو لفظي.
