يُقّدم هذا الكتاب الحصيلة النظرية لبحوث كان كتاب الورثة عام 1964 هو الحلقة الأولى منها. يحاول بورديو انطلاقاً من أعمال إمبيريقية عن العائد البيداغوجي وعن الاستعمال الثَقِفْ أو المجتمعي الدارج للغة وللثقافة الجامعيتين، وعن الآثار الاقتصادية والرمزية للامتحان والشهادة، بناء نظرية عامة لأفعال العنف الرمزي وللشروط الاجتماعية لتورية هذا العنف.
إنّ المدرسة تنتج أوهاماً آثارها أبعد من أن تكون وهمية: هكذا، فإنّ وهم اللاتبعية والحياد المدرسيين، إنما هو مبدأ للمساهمة، الأكثر نوعية، التي تدلي بها المدرسة لإعادة إنتاج النظام القائم. وبالتالي، فإنّ محاولة إماطة اللثام عن القوانين التي تعيد المدرسة وفقها إنتاج بنية توزيع رأس المال الثقافي تعني ليس فقط أن نوفّر وسائل فهم التناقضات التي تمس اليوم أنساق التقليد فهماً كاملاً، بل أيضاً أن نسهم في بناء نظرية للممارسة التي بتشكيلها للأعوان باعتبارهم نتاجات للبنى، يعيدون إنتاج البنى، فإنها تفلت والحال من ذاتوية الحرية الخلاقة، كما من موضوعانية الجامعة البنيوية.
