لا تتسع الكلمات للتعريف بهوميروس، أو بملحمتيه "الإلياذة والأوديسة"، فهما في طليعة الأعمال التي خلدها الزمن، ربما لم يكن يقصد أو يدوّن فيهما نصاً دينياً، إلا أنه، في الواقع، قد فعل؛ ففي كلا الملحمتين سرد للآلهة، كبيرها وصغيرها، مع تخصصاتها، ولكل ما اعتقده الإغريق حول هذه الآلهة.
كما أنه وثق طقوساً دينية كانت سائدة، مثل حرق جثمان الميت كي تتحرر روحه، وأهمية حرق الأضحيات من أجل راحة أرواح الموتى، ومن أجل التقرب من الآلهة وشكرها، إضافة إلى مفاهيم الحياة الأخرى.
صحيح أن "الإلياذة" ملحمة حربية، و"الأوديسة" مغامرات بحرية، إلا أنهما، في واقع الأمر، نصان دينيان بإمتياز؛ فالخلاف الإسبارطي الطروادي، ما هو إلا إنعكاس للخلاف الحقيقي بين الآلهة، حول التفاحة التي كتب عليها: "للأجمل".
وهكذا، فقد أخذت أفروديت تساند باريس، وأثينا تدعم أوديسيوس، وإريس يقف مع هيكتور، أما زيوس فكانت قدرته الكلية تتجلى في تغيير مصائر الجيوش بين ليلة وضحاها، كل هذا يدفعنا إلى القول: إن الملحمتين تشكلان أول كتاب ديني معروف.
