تتموضع التجربة الشعرية العربية الحديثة ضمن نمطين من القصائد:
النمط الأول: الذي أرسى دعائمه "السياب" والذي تتمحور فيه القصيدة حول خطاب مركزي تتفرع عنه خطابات فرعية أخرى يحرص فيها الشاعر على إيصالها إلى جمهوره، بالطبع مع عدم إهمال البنية الفنية التي يتموضع هذا الخطاب داخلها.
النمط الثاني: وقد أرسى دعائمه "أودنيس" و"الماغوط" و"الخال"، والذي تتمحور فيه القصيدة حول بنيتها اللغوية لينداح الخطاب جانباً لصالح اللغة/الصورة الشعرية مع عدم الاكتراث ببنية الخطاب وكيفية إيصاله.
وإذا كان هذان النمطان محدديين ويمكن الوصول إليهما بسهولة أثناء قراءة العطاء الشعري العربي الحديث، فإن هذا لا يعني بالطبع عدم وجود قصائد تتماوج في انتمائها بين النمطين معاً، إذ يمكن الفصل داخل القصيدة الواحدة بين مقاطع أو أجزاء تنتمي إلى قصيدة الخطاب، وبين مقاطع أو أجزاء أخرى تذهب باتجاه بنية النص، وجنون اللغة، وربما تكون قصيدة "بيروت" للشاعر محمود درويش هي المثال الحي على مثل هذا التمازج بين النمطين.
