حاولت - في هذا الكتاب - أن أعرض لتلك الأدوات التي اعتمدها الشعراء، والمحدثين منهم بخاصة، في رسم صورهم الشعرية، وحصرتها - فيما اتفق عليه معظم النقاد - في الصور التشبيهية، والاستعارية، والرمزية، والكنائية، والتصوير بالحقيقة، وبينت وسائل تشكيل كل نوع من هذه الصور وطرق استخدامها، ورفدتها بأمثلة من الشعر العربي قديمه ومعاصره، برزت فيها الخصائص التي جعلت من الصورة الشعرية كيانًا فنيًا، نابضًا بالحياة الإنسانية، وعنيت بالكلمة على أساس أنها الريشة التي يرسم بها الشاعر صورته، وينقل بها تجربته الشعورية العميقة، كما تجلى في النقدات التطبيقية دور الكلمة، بكل ما تحمله من قيم صوتية في بناء تلك الصورة الشعرية، واتبعت في ذلك منهجًا تحليليًا للوقوف على عناصر الصورة وتحديد علاقات أجزائها وارتباطها بالكل، لإدراك أعماقها الخفية من أجل الكشف عن التجربة الشعرية. ثم تعقبت عملية الإبداع الشعري في تطورها وكيفية فهم القدماء لها، وأثر ذلك في معالجاتهم لأمهات قضايا النقد، وختمت بتناول قضية الوحدة الفنية ومقاييس اضطراب الصورة أو الاتساق والتآزر، من حيث كونها دليلًا على قدرة الشاعر على جعل القصيدة بنية حية تتحرك في إطارها كل الصورة الجزئية، وإذا كنت قد رجعت إلى تراثنا النقدي فإني لم أجد خيرًا من عبد القاهر الجرجاني، الذي بز جل نقاد عصره في هذا المجال الذي يتصل بالتصوير الشعري.
