وإلى جانب الساسة شعراء وأدباء أبرزهم موليير وبوالو وملتون، وأساقفة وفلاسفة ومؤمنون وملاحدة يقودهم هوبز وباركلي وسبينوزا يثيرون العقل على الدين، أو الكنيسة على الجامعة، وخلفهم مراصد تحمل عيون الفلكيين إلى المجرّات، ومباض تغوص بأنامل الأطباء بين الأعصاب والأوردة لتقفهم على أسرار الجسد البشري.
