قبل مطالعتي هذا الكتاب كنت مشغوفاً بعُمان بسبب من زيارتي اليتيمة لهذا البلد الجذاب. وقوي أملي بمصير السلطنة لما عرفت الايديولوجية الدينيّة والسياسيّة التي تحكمها منذ ألف سنة. وانبهرت بما كتب الدكتور حسين غباش على المستوى الأكاديمي الفائق السمو. كنت قد تربيت في دراستي وعيشي الطويل في باريس على ان الديمقراطية نتاج غربي لا مثيل له في ما قدّمه الشرق من فكر سياسي حتى أقنعني الكاتب بوجود ديموقراطية عُمانية راسية على قواعد واضحة، متماسكة، المبدأ فيها هو شورى ترمي الى توحيد الأمة. روح هذه الديمقراطية ومداها نظام الإمامة القائم على الانتخاب الحرّ للإمام. والطريقة هي البيعة اي التعاقد الرسمي المكتوب بين الإمام والأمة.
أنا أفهم أن تكون كتابة التاريخ كتابة تفسيريّة أي مبتلّة ببعض فلسفة. غير ان ما يثير اعجابك بمحاولة الدكتور غباش التاريخيّة انها ليست اسيرة فلسفة طاغية. في المرحلة الحديثة عنده عروبة ما ذات نكهة إسلاميّة. ولكن عنده، بصورة كثيفة، كيانيّة عُمانيّة فريدة جداً في دنيا العرب ودنيا المسلمين. أطروحة يدافع عنها بشراسة حلوة، اذ تجعل عمان بلداً عظيماً على تقادم الأزمنة كلها. كيف يبدو في عزلة شبه الجزيرة العربية قطعة منها كثيرة التطور في إطار الفلسفة السياسيّة وذلك في إخلاصها للإسلام. واذا كنت على شكّ من هذا فيزول شكّك اذا قرأت ثبت المراجع العربية والأجنبية بدقة. عندنا هنا دفاع بلا غلوّ عن المواقف العقائديّة والتاريخيّة التي وقفها الشعب العُماني الساحر والذي استطاع ان يكشف عبقريّته الدكتور حسين غباش.
