كتب أمير الشعراء أحمد شوقى العديد من القصائد الرائعة للأطفال والناشئة. وقد جمعها الشاعر الأستاذ أحمد سويلم فى هذا الكتاب وصدَّرها بمقدمة وافية حول أمير الشعراء وهذه القصائد وتاريخها، ثم قسَّمها إلى ثلاثة فصول: الأول: قدَّم فيه مختارات من قصائد شوقى (للكبار)، التى أثبتها فى ديوانه ورأى أنها تصلح لأن تُقدَّم لهذه المرحلة العمرية، لما فيها من بساطة الإيقاع، وقرب المعنى، وارتباط بعضها بالحس الوطنى. الثانى: قدَّم فيه متفرقات من الأناشيد التى كتبها شوقى وتصلُح أن يرددها القارئ الصغير، وفيها من الوصف والمعنى ما يناسب مستواه العقلى. الثالث: قدَّم فيه كل ما يخص الحيوان من أقاصيص وحِكَم. وبذلك تُجمَع هذه القصائد لأول مرة فى كتاب واحد ليستمتع بها القراء.
