الرثاء هو البكاء علي الميت ومدحه في الوقت نفسه، ويقول قدامة ابن جعفر" ليس بين المراثي والنعت فرق الا ان يذكر في اللفظ ما يدل علي انه لهالك"، وفي هذا اللون الشعري يتم تعداد خصال الميت بصفاته الايجابية مثل الكرم والشجاعة والعفة والإخلاص وربما ذكر نسبه و قبيلته التي ينحدر منها وهو رثاء للميت ومدح للعائلة في الوقت نفسه.
ويمكن تقسيم الرثاء الي اقسام ثلاثة هي الندب والتأبين والعزاء، في الندب يكون البكاء ساعة الاحتضار وبعيداً عن الاشخاص، قد يكون ندب الوطن الذي يمر بمحنة وقاب قوسين أو ادني من الانهيار، أما التأبين فهو بعيد عن النواح، وهو الصورة المماثلة للمدح لكن للشخص الميت، اما العزاء فهو أقرب لتأمل حقيقة الموت وقد نجد به شيئاً من الفلسفة وكسخرية مريرة قد يخرج الرثاء من باب بكاء وتأبين المخلوق إلي القيم والصفات وبما أنه معلوم ليس الصفات ليست كائنا فتوجيه الرثاء لها يكون وصفاً مريراً مثل رثاء القيم والأخلاق و الفروسية.
في العصر الأندلسي ظهر لون جديد من الرثاء، جاء خاصاً بالمُدن، وكان الاندلسيون معروفون برقة المشاعر، وهو ما جعل هذا اللون الشعري يخرج صادقاً ليعبر عن الانتكاسة التي مرت بها الأندلُس، لكن تبقي كلمات الرثاء في النهاية معبرة عن أحاسيس الشاعر تجاه الفقيد المادي والمعنوي، وبرحيل الشاعر نفسه تبقي أبياته لتذكرنا به هو نفسه قبل الشخص المرئي.
