بين العلامة الطيبي منهجه في تأليفه كتاب "التبيان في علم البيان" إذ يقول أنه قد رتبه على فنين هما: فن البلاغة، وفن الفصاحة ففي الفن الأول تناول علوم البلاغة الثلاثة وهي: علم المعاني، وعلم البيان، وعلم البديع، وتكلم عن الفن الثاني عما يتعلق بفصاحة الألفاظ، وفصاحة التراكيب اللغوية. فاستغرق شرحه لعلمي المعاني والبيان نصف الكتاب، والنصف الآخر لعلم البديع ولفصاحة اللفظ والكلام. وقد اعتمد في شرحه لعلوم البلاغة، والفصاحة على ما ضمنه صاحب المفتاح وعدّه أصلاً كما انه اعتمد على ما في الكشاف ورشح كتابه بما في المصباح، والإيضاح من النوادر، وبزبدة النهاية، والمثل السائر.
هذا وقد اكثر المصنف من الآيات البينات شواهد موضوعات كتابه، تفسيرها مبينا الأغراض البلاغية، وأسرارها مستعيناً بأحاديث نبوية أحياناً أو بآيات شعرية غالباً يدعم بها آراءه، وما يذهب إليه إن كان مؤيداً لغيره أو مفنداً لآراء لا يأخذ بها، أو يرفضها. وأودع من الشواهد الشعرية أشعاراً كثيرة لمختلف العصور كالعصر الجاهلي والإسلامي والعصور العباسية المتعددة، وكشعراء مشهورين كامرئ القيس والأعشى... هذا وقد زيل الكتاب بتحقيق لطيف هدفه فهم معانيه وبيان ما لهذا السفر النفيس من أثر في التراث العربي الإسلامي وتجلى عمل المحقق بـ: أولاً: إكمال العبارات الناقصة أو الساقطة من الأصل، ثانياً: ضبط أسماء الأعلام مع ذكر ترجمة موجزة للغويين والنجاة والشعراء والكتاب وبخاصة المغمورين منهم، ثالثاً: شرح بعض المفردات العربية، رابعاً: تصحيح ما نسب إلى الشعراء خطأ، وبيان نسبة الاختلاف للأبيات إلى اكثر من قائل. خامساً: تخريج الأمثال من كتب الأمثال، وكتب اللغة أيضاً.
