على أن أكبر تحدٍ واجهني في هذا الكتاب، تمثّل في امتلاك الجرأة على إعادة النظر في أحكامي النمطية على كتاب (الاستشراق) لإدوارد سعيد الذي كنت وما زلت وسأظل أعدّه معْلَمًا من معالم الفكر والنقد في القرن العشرين؛ فقد التحقت بجامعة اليرموك في عام (1982) بعد عام واحد من صدور الطبعة العربية للكتاب التي اضطلع بترجمتها الدكتور كمال أبو ديب، أحد أبرز النقاد العرب آنئذ، وأبرز أساتذة قسم اللغة العربية وآدابها، فانتصبت أمامي لذلك – كما انتصبت أمام سواي من الزملاء الناشطين ثقافيًا – هالتان كبيرتان لا قبل لي بدفعهما؛ هالة إدوارد سعيد وهالة كمال أبو ديب. وازدادت هاتان الهالتان توهجًا في ضوء لقاءاتي وحواراتي مع الدكتور كمال أبو ديب الذي كان يبدو في مستهل الثمانينات من القرن المنصرم أشبه بأسطورة تمشي على قدمين. وأعترف بأنني طالعت الكتاب في عام (1983) تحت وطأة هذه الهالة وردّدت مع غيري من المطالعين المبهورين آيات الإعجاب والاندهاش، ثم أعدت مطالعته ثانية في عام (2001) في ضوء أحداث الحادي عشر من أيلول وردّدت بعض ما جاء فيه من آراء ومواقف داعمة لوجهة نظري في تلك المطاحنة الحضارية التي أعقبت الأحداث، لكنني فقدت أثناء هذه المطالعة قدرًا غير قليل من حماستي الأولى. ولما طالعته للمرة الثالثة في عام (2012) أدركت حقيقة أنني حتى أقنع القرّاء بأطروحتي، فيجب أن أتخلص أنا أولاً من الهالة الكبيرة التي تحيط بـ(الاستشراق) وبـ(إدوارد سعيد) دون أن ينفي ذلك حقيقة أن الكتاب والكاتب، سيظلان أبرز عناوين الجدل الخلاّق المحتدم داخل الغرب نفسه من جهة، وبين الغرب والشرق من جهة ثانية.
