إن الفترة الزمنية الطويلة، التي حكم فيها بنو الأحمر الأندلس، كانت إحدى البواعث ببحث المؤلف في الرسائل الديوانية الصادرة عنهم، لأنها خَيْرُ شاهدٍ على الأوضاع السياسية والإجتماعية والفكرية التي آلت إليها غَرْناطة عشية سقوطها، ولأنها أصدق وثائق عاصرت اللحظات العصيبة من تاريخ الأمة، والمنعطفات الموجعة في مسيرتها، حين غربت شمس الإسلام عن تلك البلاد.
لذلك، يرمي المؤلف في هذا الكتاب إلى إستجلاء صورة الرسائل الديوانية وأهميتها، وموضوعاتها، وخصائصها الفنية، وأبرز أعلامها، وبناءً عليه، جاء الكتاب في تمهيد وأربعة فصول وخاتمة، ففي التمهيد أوجز المؤلف إمتداد دولة بني الأحمر، جغرافياً، وزمنياً.
أما الفصل الأول، فقد تناول فيه مفهوم الرِّسالة الديوانية، وأهميتها، ومواصفاتها عند بني الأحمر، وأما الفصل الثاني فصنف فيه المؤلف الرسائل الديوانية، حسب موضوعاتها، وفي الفصل الثالث عرف المؤلف بثلاثة من أبرز كُتاب الإنشاء عند بني الأحمر، وهو أبو الحسن بن الجيّاب، ولسان الدين بن الخطيب، وأبو عبد الله بن زمرك، مترجماً لحياتهم، واصفاً السمات الفنية الخاصّة لكل منهم في صَوْغ الرِّسالة الديوانية، وإسهام كُلِّ منهم في كتابتها.
وفي الفصل الرابع تحدث عن السمات العامة والفنيِّة للرسائل الديوانية، من حيث بناؤها وأساليبها، وطرائق كتابتها، ومُحسِّناتها البديعة، أما الخاتمة فقد أوجز فيها أهم النتائج التي توصل إليها.
