يعدّ لسان الدين بن الخطيب 713- 776هـ من أشهر أدباء عصره وعلمائه وساسته، وقد ولد بمدينة لوشة سنة 713هـ، لعائلة اشتهر رجالها بالعلم والأدب والفقه والسياسة، وذاع صيته في المشرق والمغرب، وتنقل بين المغرب والأندلس: سفيراً ولاجئاً سياسياً، وقد حظي من الباحثين بدراسات كثيرة، لا يحتاج معها إلى زيادة تعريف، وتجعل الإفاضة في تفاصيل حياته ضرباً من التكرار غير المحمود.
قد أراد المؤلف من هذا الكتاب هدفين: أولهما: إستقصاء ما تناثر من موشحات لسان الدين، في مظانّها المختلفة، وبعث أثر نفيس من آثاره الأدبية، ليكون في متناول الدارسين، والمهتمين بأدب الأندلس بعامّة، وأدب لسان الدين بخاصَّة، وثانيهما: إضاءة جانبٍ من جهود لسان الدين الأدبية، غفل عن دراسته الباحثون، على الرغم من كثرة الدراسات التي أفردت له، دون أن يكون لفن التوشيح نصيب منها، وإبراز ما أضافه لسان الدين إلى فن التوشيح من خصائص وسمات، فضلاً على ما لهذا البحث من بالغ الأهمية في الدراسات الأدبية العربية في الأندلس.
وقد قسم هذا الكتاب إلى قسمين: أوّلهما الدراسة الموضوعية والفنيّة، وبيان أهمية موشحات لسان الدين في تاريخ فن التوشيح، وبما حظيت به من معارضات، أما القسم الثاني فيكون لجَمْع ما وصل إلى المؤلف من موشحات لسان الدين، موثقة توثيقاً تاماً، ومرتبة حسب فاقية الخرجة، وحسب قوة الحركة لحروف الرويّ المتشابهة.
وقد كانت طريقته في جمع الموشحات وتوثيقها على النحو الآتي: 1-اتخذ مؤلفات لسان الدين بن الخطيب أساساً في الجمع والتوثيق، إلا ما ورد غير مكتمل في هذه المؤلفات، وورد مكتملاً في المصادر الأخرى، 2-رتب الموشحات حسب رويِّ الخرجة، وقوّة الحركة في الحروف المتشابهة، 3-ذكر إزاء كل موشحة فيما إذا كانت موافقة للأوزان الشعرية المألوفة، أو غير موافقة لها، أي أنها على أوزان مستحدثة، 4-ذكر إزاء كلّ موشحة فيما إذا كانت معربة، أو غير معربة، 5-أعطى كل موشحة رقماً متسلسلاً خاصاً بها، 6-وضع التخريج في موضع خاصٍ له في نهاية كُلٍّ صفحة من النص، 7-وضع إختلاف الروايات، بعد موضع التخريج مباشرة، وفي نهاية كلّ صفحة من التحقيق، 8-عرَّف بالأماكن والأعلام في مواضعها من الدراسة في القسم الأول من هذا الكتاب.
