"أسئلة الحداثة في المسرح" هي الزاوية التي اختار ياسين النصير الإنطلاق منها للوصول إلى تيارات الحداثة والتجديد في المسرح العالمي والعربي بعد تجربة دامت أربعون عاماً للكاتب في حقل المسرح كتابة ومشاركة وتنظيراً:
يحتوي الكتاب على إحدى عشرة مقالة تتوسل أهم إنجازات المسرح العراقي خلال العشر سنوات الأخيرة، في فضاء هذه المقالات ثمة تطلع نقدي جديد يطرحه الكاتب على المشتغلين بالمسرح، وخاصة النقد المسرحي يسعى من وراءه إلى ترسيمة نقدية جديدة للعرض المسرحي تؤسس برأيه إلى نقله نوعية جديدة. وهي: أن يكون ثمة مرجع ميثيولوجي لكل عرض مسرحي أولاً، وهذا المرجع يثبت أقدام أي نص حديث على أرضية مجربة، كما يتيح للمخرج وللكاتب التفكير بأن أي نص حديث ليس مقطوع الجذور عن تاريخ الإنسان على أرض الرافدين، كما أدعو-والكلام للكاتب- لأن يحمل النص المسرحي بعداً جديداً هو البعد المعرفي، ويشكل هذا البعد تطور في مفهوم الكتابة المسرحية التي عليها أن تحمل بالإضافة إلى موضوعها بعداً فلسفياً حتى لو كانت تتحدث عن قضية محلية وشعبية، أما البعد الثالث الذي اقترحه على أية كتابة مسرحية، وخاصة المسرحية العراقية، أن تعكس طابع المدينة، فالمسرح ابن المدينة ونتاج لعلاقاتها ومؤسساتها وثقافتها وأمكنتها وحياتها. وهذا البلد يشكل أرضية أخرى مهمة وهي أن المدينة لا تشكل حاضنة للحداثة فقط، بل تؤسس للغة درامية شديدة الكثافة والتعقيد...."
هذه المقترحات التي يقدمها الكاتب هي نتيجة جدلية لعلاقة الدراما بالمثيولوجيا، والمدينة والمعرفة الفلسفية، وهي ما يعنيه بالنقلة المتميزة في المسرح العراقي الذي أراده بمثابة النقلة الكبيرة التي حدثت في مسرح السبعينيات وأوائل الثمانينيات. وها هو يطرحها اليوم على جمهور المسرح والمشتغلين به، وكل ذلك في سياق تشكل فيه أسئلة مسرحنا العربي في مجملها عين الحداثة وتصوراتها في القرن الواحد والعشرين.
يقسم الكتاب إلى سبعة فصول تتناول أسئلة الحداثة، المسرح في القرن العشرين، تيارات الحداثة في المسرح، التقنية والحداثة، الرؤية الإخراجية، الحداثة في المسرح العربي، وعي الحداثة في المسرح العراقي، وأخيراً: العروض المسرحية: وفيها: نماذج وأمثلة ونقد وحلول.
