لقد أنجبت القبائل العربية (قريش، تميم، بكر بن وائل، تغلب، عبد القيس، الأزد...) أشخاصاً كان لهم صوتٌ وشهرةٌ في هذه الحياة، بعض هؤلاء الأشخاص كانوا مفكرين، والآخر علماء وقادة، وامتاز بعضهم بالشعر فأصبحوا شعراء القبيلة.
ولكن لم يهتم الناس ببعض الشعراء والسبب يعود إلى عدم تدوين الشعر في تلك العصور، فضاع جزء كبير من الشعر العربي الأصيل؛ ومن القبائل العربية التي أنجبت فحولاً من الشعراء إلا أن شعرهم لم يُحفظ، هي قبيلة عبد القيس الربيعية، ولا يوجد كتاب وافٍ يحتوي على جميع شعرائها وشعرهم، أو بالأصح ديوان خاص بهذه القبيلة.
لذا، اختار المؤلف أحد شعرائها الفحول وهو الصَّلتان العبدي، ونتكلم عن حياته وشعره ليضيف مرجعاً إلى المكتبة العربية.
