إن القصد من تأليف هذا الكتاب مناقشة ونقد كتاب الدكتور كما يوسف الحاج: "فلسفة الميثاق الوطني"، إظهار لما فيه من تناقض في التنظير، وتناقض بين التنظير والتطبيق، وابتسار في التقريب بين المتباعد، وافتعال في التركيب بين غير القابل له وتعسف في جعل المتلاغي غير متلاغ. كل ذلك، بهدف برهنة المؤلف الدكتور الحاج، على وجود قومية لبنانية، وعلى وجوب إقامتها على الانسجام بين الإسلام والنصرانية، غير المنسجمين أصلاً، وغير القابلين للانسجام، لفهم الإنسان المتناقض لهما، لتكون الطائفية "بناءة" خلافاً لطبيعتها المفتتة، المجزئة، الهدامة، جاعلاً من هذا التناقض الديني، بل من هذا التغريب الديني، والتنافر الإيماني، أساساً للنظام السياسي اللبناني.
فالمؤلف الدكتور الحاج يقر في تنظيره هذا، أن الطائفية هدامة، ما لم تعلق على شرط التوافق والانسجام، كماً وكيفياً، بين الإسلام والنصرانية، فتصير عندئذٍ طائفية "بناءة" وذلك بجعل النصرانية في لبنان، كما الإسلام ديناً ودولة. والمؤلف الحاج المحب للفلسفة أو الحكمة باعتباره فيلسوفاً، على حد قوله، رفض الحقيقة، والحقيقة ضالة الفيلسوف، وفضل عليها "التسوية".
