هذا كتاب فريد، نبيل، طريف، فريد، لأنه ليس له نظير في كتب القدامى والعصريين، ونبيل، لأنه يعرض شوق الإنسان لأخيه الإنسان –على اختلاف المراتب والمشارب- ودون ابتغاء حاجة أو منفعة، فهو: شريف المقصد، نبيل الهدف، وطريف، لأن مؤلفه حشد للقارئ فيه كم من الأشعار، وبستاناً من النثر، اختارها بعناية عالم، وذوق أديب.
ومحمد بن سهل بن المرزبان الكرخى، البغدادي، مؤلف هذا الكتاب، لو ذعي عاش في بغداد خلال النصف الثاني من القرن الثالث، والثلث الأول من القرن الرابع الهجريين. ومن المؤسف أن هذا المصنف لم يلق عناية أحد لا من عصره، ولا في العصور اللاحقة! فهو مصنف معمور، لم يتحدث عنه إلا مؤرخ واحد وهو: محمد بن إسحاق النديم، صاحب كتاب الفهرست، ولولاه لضاع خبره وانطوى أثره، وظل كتابه الموسوم بـ"المنتهى في الكمال" ويعد كتاب "الشوق والفراق" هو الجزء الرابع منه حبيساً في خزائن الغرب والشرق، يشكو الإهمال.
وبالنظر للأهمية التي يحتلها هذا الكتاب فقد اعتنى الدكتور "جليل إبراهيم العطية" بتحقيق متنه فاهتم أولاً: بضبط الكلمات التي تحتاج إلى ضبط، خاصة الشعر. ثانياً: خرج النصوص التي تحتاج إلى تخريج وتوثيق، ولم يكثر من التخريجات مكتفياً بـألا حالة إلى المصادر المعروفة "خاصة بالنسبة لدواوين الشعر". ثالثاً: ترجم لبعض الأعلام، وترك ترجمة المشهورين لقلة الجدوى من جهة، ولئلا يثقل الهوامش من جهة أخرى. رابعاً: أِشار في هوامش الكتاب إلى ما يستطع قراءته بشكل سليم لرداءة المخطوطة. خامساً: وضع ما كتبه ضمن النص داخل معقوفين لتمييزه عن النص الأصلي. سادساً: صنع مجموعة فهارس علمية تيسر على الباحثين وطلبة العلم مهمتهم. سابعاً: كتب دراسة تناول المؤلف وحياته وعصره وكتابه.
