نال موضوع الحنين إلى الأوطان، عناية العديد من علماء اللغة العربية منذ بدء عنصر التأليف، وشهد القرن الثالث الهجري حركةً واسعة في هذا المضمار، فشارك الكثير من علماء الحديث واللغة والأدب والأنساب بوضع مؤلفات تتناول "الحنين" ومن هذه المؤلفات كتاب محمد بن سهل بن المرزبان الكرخي البغدادي الذي تحدث عبر ما بثه فيه من نصوص وأشعار عن الاغتراب الذي عانى منه هو نفسه. واللافت في هذا الكتاب إنه مبني على أسس علمية منهجية، إضافة إلى كونه يضم طائفة رائعة من الأشعار التي يندر العثور عليها في الكتب التراثية الأخرى التي تحدثت عن الحنين.
ونظراً لما لهذا الكتاب من أهمية عني "جليل العطية" بتحقيقه وفقاً للقواعد المقررة من قبل معهد المخطوطات العربية، وتجلى عمله بـ أولاً: المقابلة بين النسخ المختلفة للكتاب. ثانياً: تخريج النصوص الشعرية والنثرية الواردة في النص. ثالثاً: تقسيم النص إلى فقرات. رابعاً: ضبط ما يحتاج إلى الضبط من النص. خامساً: التعريف ببعض الإعلام. سادساً: صنع فهارس علمية للنص.
