يعكس هذا العمل جانباً من الواقع الاجتماعي الجديد في العراق، الذي يتسم بالتغيرات السريعة وتعدد عوامل التأثير في المجتمع، ما يعني اهمية تناولها بتلك الكيفية، والرشاقة في التغير والتنقل، مع الحفاظ على نسق علمي رصين من التعاطي والتحليل. ويعتمد المؤلف مقاربات متعددة توزعت بين النفسية الاجتماعية في محاولة لفهم السلوك الاجتماعي للشخصية العراقية، وانثربولجية من اجل فهم تأثير الثقافة بمعناها في الحياة اليومية. والمقاربة السوسيو-دينية، معتمداً المنهج الاجتماعي بالعودة الى الاستعانة بالاشتغالات المبكرة لإميل دوركهايم، وماكس فيبر، لفهم العلاقة بين الدين والمجتمع والدولة مثلاً. هذا فضلاً عن المقاربة الجندرية، في سبيل استجلاء المنظور النسوي، لفهم أثر توزيع الادوار والمكانات بين الرجل والمرأة، وصلة ذلك بالتنشئة الاجتماعية والهيمنة الذكورية.
يضع الكاتب فرضية رئيسية لبحثه مفادها "ان الشخصية العراقية قد اصبحت عدوانية وانفعالية وقلقة، وتتسم بالعجز المكتسب"، وذلك جراء ما مرت به من ظروف عصيبة، تتمثل بالحروب، والحصار، وتحدي الارهاب. وان كان اختبار مثل هذه الفرضية يعتر صعب جداً، نتيجة غياب دراسات واحصائيات توضح لنا وبالمقارنة هذا الفارق، فإن الكاتب حاول جهده بالاعتماد على رصده، ومواكبته للأحداث، والمظاهر السلوكية التي طفحت الى السطح ولعل لانتشار وسائل الاعلام في العراق، وتعدد مرجعيتها، عكس ما كان شائعاً من قبل، إضافة الى الاعلام التفاعلي، ووسائل الاتصال عبر الانترنت الاخرى دور في تيسير تتبع تلك الظواهر وفك بعض الغازها.
