لا شك في أن المهمة التي آثر الدكتور علي وتوت أن يحمل عبئها، شائكة وعسيرة، ليس من حيث صعوبتها وحسب، بل من حيث كونها تضعه على خطوط التماس مع المقدس الديني، لهذا الجانب أو ذاك، أو ذلك، وما أكثر الجوانب المقدسة دينيا، أو بالأحرى أيديولوجيا، في بلد فسيفسائي التركيب، مثل العراق الذي يضرب في أعماق التاريخ، سواء في مقدساته، أو أعراقه، أو تاريخه، أو حتى جغرافيته.
ومهما حاول الكاتب أن يكون حيادياً وعلمانياً (بالمفهوم العلمي وليس الاصطلاحي) فإنه لن يستطيع أن يرضي جميع الأطراف، خصوصاً وأن الدراسة العلمية لا يقصد بها إرضاء هذا أو ذاك، وإنما البحث عن الحقيقة، وتناول الواقع كما هو، وصولاً إلى اكتشاف العلاقة بين الحدث وأسبابه، وبين الظاهرة وعللها، ليصار بالتالي إلى أخذ العبرة، وتلافي الوقوع في التجربة نفسها، حتى لا نتجرع كأس الخلافات، والاختلافات، ثم التخلف، كلما هبت على مجتمعاتنا عاصفة، وما أكثر العواصف التي عرفناها عبر التاريخ...
