يتصدى الكتاب من وجهة نظر السيكولوجيا الاجتماعية، لعدد من الظواهر السلوكية والمستجدات النفسية التي برزت وتفاعلت في شخصية الفرد العراقي خلال السنوات الخمسة التي أعقبت لحظة التغيير الدراماتيكية في 9 نيسان/إبريل 2003م.
يطرح المؤلف سؤالاً استهلالياً يتلخص فيه الهدف الفكري للكتاب: "وماذا عن مصير المجتمع الذي شهد انهيار دولته هذه؟ وماذا عن شخصية الاجتماعية لفرد وجد نفسه بلا مؤسسات تمنحه الأمن، والهوية الجمعية، والثقة بجدوى الاجتماع البشري؟!"
ثم تتوالى إجاباته تباعاً وضمناً عبر مقالات الكتاب ودراساته، متبنياً فرضية المسارات الجدلية التي تنطوي عليها علاقة الاقتصاد السياسي بالسيكولوجيا الاجتماعية: "الشخصية العراقية وجدت نفسها أسيرة في ثقب تاريخي أسود، فاندفعت قسراً مستنزفة طاقة الماضي النفسية لديها.. فالتعصب والتفكير النمطي والطائفية التي شهدت سفك الدم العراقي من جرائها، ما هي إلا طاقة ماض جاهل وأساطيري، جرى استحضارها في مختبرات "العولمة المتوحشة"، ومن ثم تقطيرها إلى عنصرين ثمينين: "دماء محلية" تلغي قدسية الحياة وغاياتها التشاركية، و"أرصدة مليارية" تكدس في خزائن ما وراء البحار".
يقع الكتاب في فصلين، أحدهما يتبع منهج التحليل النظري، فيما يختص الآخر بمنهج الدراسات الميدانية الموثقة التي أجراها المؤلف. إنه محاولة هادئة لتوثيق شبكة العلاقات البنائية الوظيفية التي تحكم شخصية الفرد العراقي، على خلفية مشهد سياسي دموي تم إعداد أجزاء أساسية منه بمعزل عن نسيج تلك الشخصية.
