إن هذه الدراسة هي الكتاب الأول من عمل شامل في النظرية التحليلية النفسية. وقد بدأت بدراسة العدوان والتدميرية لأنها، فضلاً عن أنها إحدى المشكلات النظرية الأساسية في التحليل النفسي ، تجعلها موجة التدميرية التي تغمر العالم إحدى أوثق الدراسات إتصالاً بالأمور العملية.
وعندما شرعت في هذا الكتاب قبل أكثر من ست سنوات استهنت كثيراً بالصعوبات التي من شأني أن أواجهها، وسرعان ما صار واضحاً أنني لن أستطيع أن أكتب عن التدميرية البشرية على الوجه الذي يفي بالغرض إذا ظللت ضمن حدود ميدان كفاءتي الأكبر، وهو التحليل النفسي، إذ بينما المقصود أن يكون هذا البحث تحليلاً نفسياً قبل كل شيء، فأنا أحتاج كذلك إلى القليل من المعرفة في ميادين أخرى، وخصوصاً في فيزيولوجيا الأعصاب، وعلم النفس الحيواني، وعلم المستحاثات، والأنثروبولوجيا، لكي أتجنب العمل في إطار مرجعي شديد الضيق يؤدي، من ثمّ، إلى التحريف. كان ينبغي لي على الأقل أن أكون قادراً على التحقق من صحة إستنتاجاتي بالمعطيات الرئيسية من الميادين الأخرى لأتيقن من أن فرضياتي لا تناقضها وأحدد، كما أن أملي، مسألة هل تؤكد فرضياتي.
وما دام لا يوجد عمل يُذكر ويوحّد المكتشفات حول العدوان في كل هذه الميادين، أو حتى يجمّلها في أي مجال من مجالات التخصص، كان عليّ أن أقدم بهذه المحاولة بنفسي. وقد اعتقدت أن من شأن هذه المحاولة أن تخدم قرائي.
