يتناول هذا الكتاب العمارة الملكية في بلاد الرافدين في الفترة الممتدة من عصر سلالة أور الثالثة إلى نهاية العصر البابلي القديم ( 2112 – 1595 ق.م ) . وتعد هذه الفترة أكثر أهمية من الفترات الأخرى العائدة إلى عصر البرونز فيما يتعلق بالعمارة الملكية ، إذ شهدت بلاد الرافدين إزدهاراً كبيراً في هذا المجال ، وزاد عدد القصور في مدنها ، وشهد القصر تطوراً كبيراً من الناحيتين المعمارية والوظيفية ، وأصبح مركز المملكة ، يسكنه الملك مع عائلته كبيت له ، ويدير منه مملكته سياسياً وإدارياً وإقتصادياً . ومما يؤكد تطوره تشييده وفق مخطط مسبق ، وتقسيمه من الداخل إلى عدة أقسام بطريقة مدروسة ، وربط هذه الأقسام بعضها ببعض من خلال الأبواب التي توزعت على جدرانه الداخلية ، وإعطاء كل قسم وظيفة تتناسب مع تجهيزاته ومساحة حجراته وأشكالها . ولم يغب عن بال المعماريين أيضاً تزويد القصور بمصادر للإنارة ، لتكون صالحة للسكن . وأخذوا بالحسبان تجهيزها بأسس قوية ؛ لدعم الجدران من جهة ، ولتكون هذه الأخيرة قادرة على حمل طابق علوي خُصص لأكثر من وظيفة ( مسكن للعائلة الملكية ومستودع لحفظ أرشيف الدولة ) .
