كان "الإمتلاك أو الوجود" آخر ما كتبه إيريك فروم قبل وفاته، ويعدّ عُصارة فكره على الإطلاق.
عرف رواجاً قياسياً منذ نشره لأول مرة، وأُعيد نشره بإنتظام بمعدّل مرتين في كل أربع سنوات إلى يومنا هذا.
ولا يُعدّ هذا نجاحاً مادياً للكتاب فقط، بل يترجم حاجة باطنية ملحة لدى الإنسان الغربي في البحث عن بديل، ولربما بدائل، لما وصلت إليه الحضارة الغربية المعاصرة، المشجّعة لمبدأ الإمتلاك على مبدأ الوجود، أي دعم فكر نهب الإنسان لأخيه الإنسان وللمحيط الطبيعي الذي يعيش في أحضانه، بحثاً عن كل سبل هدم الإنسان لذاته بذاته.
لا يدعو فروم في كتابه هذا إلى التخلّي النهائي عن "الإمتلاك" والعيش في "زهد" و"تقشف"، بقدر ما يُنبّه إلى ضرورة وعينا بالمبدأين معاً، وضرورة إيجاد التوازن الضروري بينهما، سواء على المستوى الفردي أو الجماعي، من أجل المحافظة على الكرامة الإنسانية بالدرجة الأولى وكرامة البيئة الطبيعية حيث يعيش، إذا كان المرء يريد العيش في كون يحافظ فيه على الإنسان.
إذا وعى الإنسان هذا الأمر، وتحرّر من الإستهلاك الأعمى وغير الضروري للمُنتجات الصناعية، بما في ذلك وسائل الترفيه، ومنها بالخصوص التي تُساهم في "تبليد" الإنسان، فإنه يستطيع التحرّر من كل الإكراهات البدنية والنفسية والإجتماعية للمجتمع الصناعي الإمتلاكي، والمرور إلى مرحلة جديدة في تطوّره، ليُصبح إنساناً عاقلاً بالفعل، وليس مستهلكاً ومالكاً لأشياء تملكه وتستعبده بطرق شتّى.
