هذه الدراسة هي مرافعة لصالح اللاجئين الفلسطينيين، وبيان من أجل حقوقهم الإنسانية، والسياسية، وقد قارب فيها الباحث قضيتهم من منظورين اثنين. أولاهما هو منظور تحديد المسؤوليات في إنتاجها وسبر تفاعلاتها ومضاعفاتها على الجسم الكلي للمنطقة العربية، وليس على العرب الفلسطينيين والإسرائيليين اليهود فقط. وثانيهما هو منظور استشرافي يتصل بسل الحل الوحيد الذي يمكن وصفه بأنه عادل، وهو الحل الذي يستند بالضرورة على مبادئ الاجتماع الإنساني الحديث وأساسه الحقوق الإنسانية في الوطن والمواطنة والمساواة والديموقراطية، وتجافي بالتالي على أشكال التمييز والعسف.
وقد توخت الدراسة مقاربة عدد محدد من الأسئلة من دون غيرها من الأسئلة الضرورية لكل مقاربة شاملة وإن للقضية الفلسطينية ككل أو لقضية اللاجئين الفلسطينيين على وجه الخصوص. فقد ركزت الدراسة على سؤال محوري يتصل بكيف حصلت النكبة الفلسطينية في العام 1948 وليس بلماذا حصلت. ولماذا اقتلع الفلسطينيون من تربتهم وعالمهم وطردوا من وطنهم وحوّلوا منذ خمسين سنة إلى شعب جلُّه من اللاجئين، وليس كيف عاشوا هذا اللجوء، أو العوامل الداخلية أو البنيوية التي أسهمت في انهيارهم وهزيمتهم واقتلاهم وتحولهم إلى لاجئين.
