في هذا الكتاب يقدم الأستاذ أحمد خير الدين مقارنة بين إبن هانئ ومعاصره أبي الطيب المتنبي، ويورد صور مصغرة من الموازنة بينهما، علّنا نرى - يقول المؤلف - هل هناك وجه لمن أطلق لقب (متنبي الغرب) على ابن هانئ، أم كال له التسمية جزافاً؟
يعالج المؤلف هذا الموضوع بقصد (الإطناب والتحليل) ثم يرد على كل ما قرأه من "التحامل السمج، والتحيز الصبياني ولا سيّما إذا كان صادراً عن بعض من ينتحلون الثقافة، وينتسبون للأدب والتفكير، أمثال كامل كيلاني في كتابه "نظرات في تاريخ الأدب الأندلسي" وعبد الرحمن البرقوقي في كتابه "حضارات العرب في الأندلس" وغيرهم ...".
أما بالنسبة إلى قراءته لشعر المتنبي وحكمه عليه إنما اقتصر على جوهر نظمه مجرداً من كل شرح وتعليق، وتقديم ملخص عن حياة أبي الطيب المتنبي، ثم العمل على إيحاء مقارنة بين إبن هانئ والمتنبي في الوصف والمذهب والمديح والأخلاق ومذهب الشاعر في الخمر وحلة الكرم، وفلسفة الشاعرين، وختم بنقد الرسالة الحاتمية وهي مما ألفه أبو علي بن المظفر الحاتمي كرسالة الغرض منها الموافقة بين قطع من كلام أرسطاطليس الفيلسوف اليوناني وبين أبيات المتنبي، مطابقة أشد المطابقة لها ...
عن المؤلف: أحمد خير الدين/ شاعر النشيد الوطني التونسي (1906-1967م) عالمٌ وروائي، وشاعر غنائي، ومؤلف مسرحي، تونسي ... له الكثير من الأعمال والمؤلفات، تصدر تباعاً لأول مرة ضمن سلسلة " أحمد خير الدين: الأعمال الكاملة".
