بدأ الجوهري حياته في النجف لأسرة عريقة في الفقه والأدب ونشأ نشأة دينية بامتياز واعتمر العمامة في بدايات حياته، إلا أنه كان دائم التمرد والثورة، سواء في حياته أم في أشعاره ورغم عمله في البلاط الملكي في العراق وفي التدريس فقد ترك كل ذلك منطلقاً للشعر والصحافة والنضال الوطني.
يقول الجواهري عن نفسه أنه مزج المتناقضات في حياته وكان هكذا فعلاً. في شعره مال إلى النظم المطول ولكن دونما إسفاف، وإلى الديباجة الجزلة والصياغة الكلاسيكية الفخمة. دافع بشعره عن حقوق الإنسان وكرامته وكان إلى ذلك شاعر مناسبات إلا أنه اتخذ المناسبة كوسيلة للتعبير عما يدور في ذهنه من خواطر وانفعالات. تأثر بالشعراء العرب الكبار كالمتنبي وأبي تمام والبحتري وغيرهم، لكنه طعم شعره بالجديد وبأفكار العصر الثورية.
