يروي هذا الكتاب شذرات من حكايات كاتبه مع بشر التقاهم على هذه الأرض ينتمي معظمهم إلى حقول الفن والكتابة والإبداع، أشخاص أثروا فيه وأسهموا في صياغته على امتداد مسارات حياته الثقافية، إذ عاش زمانهم وعاشوا زمانه.
الكاتب، في النهاية هو واحد من هؤلاء الذين تقاطعت دروبهم مع دربه، فكتب عنهم حيث اقتحمت ظلالهم ظله وامتزجت فيه، تسربت إلى شخصه، واستقرت في الذاكرة وهو عندما يكتب عنهم إنما يكتب عن نفسه، أو ربما يكتب نفسه ولا أحد غيره!!
فإذا كان الصديق (آخر هو أنت)، فإن الكتابة عن الذات التي هي أنت، لا لتنفيها بتواضعها الكاذب، لكنك ربما تتحايل على حقيقتها لتروي، بشكل من الأشكال، شظايا وفصولاً متباعدة ومتقاطعة من سيرتك.
عموماً، فإن الكتابة بمجملها هي، بشكل من الأشكال، سيرة أو ما يشبه السيرة، حتى لو تكتب كمشروع مخطط له أراد أن يكتب نفسه كسيرة محددة لفرد محدد.
وأما الظل هنا فهو أنا الكاتب نفسه، فإن لم يظهر الظل جلياً في الصورة، فهو أمر لا يعني الغياب، بل حضور الأنا في الآخر.
