الإستيلاء على الأرض .
في عام 1950 يصل برنارد هابر مع أهله ، وهو في العاشرة من عمره ، من برسلاه إلى مدينة ساكسونية صغيرة . يفضل فيها المرء رؤية اللاجئين والمهجّرين ومن هدم القصف بيوتهم يواصلون رحيلهم اليوم قبل الغد ، سرعان ما يدرك الفتى أن الطريق الوحيدة أمامه هي تلقي الضربات المرة تلو الأخرى ، والتغلّب على الصعوبات . لا يستغرب أحد من أن برنارد ، وبعد إنهائه الصف الثامن ، يشرع في تدريبه المهني ، ليصبح نجاراً مثل أبيه ، وذلك قبل أن يكسب ، فيما بعد ، أموالاً طائلة بين وقت وآخر ، كصاحب أرجوحة دوّارة في المواسم الشعبية .
بيتر كولر ، الذي نقل في سيارة معدّلة أعداداً من الركاب إلى برلين الغربية ، وزج به في السجن بضع سنوات ، يعرف بالضبط من أين لـ برنارد هذا اليُسر والرخاء كلاهما ، ولكنه لا يشي به .
يحالف الحظ برنارد بالأشخاص من حوله : زوجته فريدريكه المولعة به ، أخت زوجته كاتارينا التي علّمته ما هو الحب ، صاحب المنشرة زيغورد الذي يحرص على قبول برنارد في نادي البولينغ ، بوصفه معلم نجارة ، حيث يلتقي أصحاب الأعمال الحرّة لممارسة الضغط والتأثير في سياسة المدينة ... قبل عام 1989 ، ومن باب أولى في السنوات الصاخبة التي تلت ذلك .
