يكتشف غيش عميت في كتابه هذا عن الكثير من المعلومات والحيثيّات التي رافقت ثلاث "عمليّات" كبيرة ضلعت فيها المكتبة الوطنيّة الإسرائيليّة، من أجل زيادة مخزونها من الكتب وترقية مكانتها العلميّة والبحثيّة: جلب أكبر كميّة ممكنة من الكنوز الثقافيّة اليهوديّة التي خلّفها يهود أوروبا المقتولون في المحرقة النازيّة؛ والإستيلاء بطرق ملتوية وجنائيّة على الكنوز الثقافيّة والدينيّة التي جلبها معهم يهود اليمن في هجرتهم إلى إسرائيل الفتيّة؛ وعملية "جمع" عشرات آلاف الكتب من المكتبات الفلسطينيّة في القدس بعد إحتلالها في النكبة.
واللافت أنّ هذه القضايا الثلاث تتشابه فيما بينها بإصرار إدارة المكتبة الوطنيّة على الإستيلاء على هذه الكتب القيّمة، بأيّ ثمن، ما يُسقط الضوء على الصراعات الداخليّة والخارجيّة التي رافقت هذه العمليات الثلاث، وهي صراعات تشهد بقوّة على تداخل البحث الأكاديميّ بالسياسة والحرب والقوّة، إلى جانب الخداع والتضليل والتنافس المحموم.
ومن بين الأمور التي ركُز عليها عميت في مقدّمة كتابة الممتاز، التطرّق وببعض الإسهاب، إلى عقدة "الشرقيّ" التي لازمت يهود أوروبا قبل وبعد إنشاء دولة إسرائيل، فعميت يوضح أنّ مصطلح "الشرقيّ" التصق بيهود أوروبا، وخصوصاً الشرقيّة، رغم أنهم يُعرفون اليوم بتسمية "الأشكناز".
لقد كان الغرب الأوروبيّ الكولونياليّ يتعامل مع اليهود الذين يعيشون فيه بإعتبارهم شرقيّين خالصين: "كان القاموس اللغوي والصور الواردة في الإستشراق، كخطاب أوروبيّ مسيحيّ عمره مئات السنوات، هو الذي جمع بين العرب واليهود سويّة، فيما مثّل العرب "الآخر الخارجيّ" لأوروبا، واليهود بإعتبارهم ممثلي "الآخر الداخلي"، ويفسرّ هذا النزعة التي لا تُقاوم (حتى اليوم) لدى يهود أوروبا الغربيّة والشرقيّة لفصل أنفسهم بشكل مستميت عن اليهود "الشرقيّين".
