وتدور محاور الدراسة فى الكتاب حول ستة موضوعات خصص لكل منها فصلاً يحقق هدفاً من أهداف الدراسة: تناول الفصل الأول: بعض الاتجاهات المعاصرة فى جغرافية الحضر فى الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية وأوروبا بهدف الكشف عن المجالات التى تطبق فيها تقنيات المعلومات الجغرافية الحديثة فى الدراسات الحضرية والظروف الجغرافية التى تستدعى ذلك، كما تناول هذا الفصل النظام الحضرى العالمى والنظرة الجغرافية إلى البيئة العالمية وعلاقتها المتبادلة مع نظيراتها المحلية.
وتناول الفصل الثانى: تأثير تقنيات المعلومات والاتصال على بيئة الحضر، والمجتمع الحضرى، والروافد الإلكترونية للتربية الحضرية، وبعض المصادر الإلكترونية للمعلومات الحضرية، أما الفصل الثالث: فتناول اتجاهات التحضر فى الدول النامية بشكل خاص، كما تناول الاتجاهات الحديثة فى دراسات العمران الريفى والتنمية الريفية.
وخصص الفصل الرابع: لعرض تقنيات المعلومات الجغرافية المتنوعة، وخصائصها، واستخداماتها، وأوجه تكاملها وتوافقها باعتبارها أدوات الدراسة والتخطيط العمرانى وأدوات الإبصار الجغرافى، وعرض الفصل الخامس: 30 بحثا تطبيقيا فى التخطيط العمرانى باستخدام تقنيات المعلومات الجغرافية المتنوعة غطت 12 محورا من محاور دراسة العمران تمثل الاتجاهات العالمية المعاصرة فى تطبيقات تقنية المعلومات الجغرافية بمفهومها الشامل، كما تناول هذا الفصل الاتجاهات العالمية فى تطبيقات تقنيات المعلومات الجغرافية فى جغرافية العمران والتخطيط العمرانى.
وخصص الفصل السادس: لحصر بحوث ودراسات تقنيات المعلومات الجغرافية والخرائط فى مصر والمنطقة العربية، وتطبيقات المؤسسات الرسمية والخاصة فى مصر بتقنيات نظم المعلومات الجغرافية والاستشعار عن بعد فى مجالات متنوعة.
