ليس ديواناً لشاعر فحل هو من ألمع شعراء العربية في العصر العباسي الأول، عنيت أبا تمام، جمع فيه أشعاره، وبنات أفكاره، وإنما هو ديوان جمع فيه صاحبه نماذج وعينات من أشعار الآخرين، اختارها بدقة متناهية، معملاً في هذا الاختيار ذوقه، مفيضاً عليه من إحساسه وفكره، فإذا هي مقطعات وقصائد شعرية قلما تجاوزت إحداها الأبيات العشرة، أو نقصت عن الثلاثة، فإن وجدت البيت الواحد المستقل القائم بنفسه، أو البيتين، فهذا قليل جداً، وقل الأمر عينه فيما يخص ما زاد على العشرة، وأياً يكن الأمر، فإن هذه المختارات الشعرية التي غلب على العديد من أصحابها انتماؤهم إلى عصر الجاهلية، وعلى العديد الآخر انتماؤهم إلى العصر الإسلامي، سواءً أكان عصر صدر الإسلام، أم العصر الأموي السابق للعصر العباسي الذي عاش فيه صاحب هذا الديوان.. أقول أياً يكن الأمر، فإن هذه المختارات الشعرية التي حملت اسم (ديوان الحماسة)،و التي حظيت بمكانة جد رفيعة، كانت وما تزال محط أنظار المعجبين والذائقين على اختلاف طبقاتهم وعصورهم وأذواقهم، كيف وقد ناهزت عدة هذه المقطعات أو القصائد تسعاً من المئات، موزعة على عشرة أبواب هي التالية: 1-باب الحماسة، 2-باب المراثي، 3-باب الأدب، 4-باب النسيب، 5-باب الهجاء، 6-باب المديح والأضياف، 7-باب الصفات، 8-باب السير والنعاس، 9-باب الملح، 10-باب مذمة النساء.
أبواب عشرة جلها هي أغراض الشعر العربي المتداولة منذ فجر الجاهلية حتى العصر الذي كان فيه أبو تمام، لا بل حتى عصرنا هذا، وهل الشعر إلا الفخر، يعني الحماسة، وإلا الرثاء، والغزل، وأرقه ما كان نسيباً، وإلا الهجاء، أو المدح، أو الوصف؟
