يشتمل هذا الكتاب على تجربة الشاعر أبو تمام في عالم الشعر، وهي تجربة غنيَّة أعاد فيها "أبو تمام" للشعر الكلاسيكي العربي ألّقه بعد ما فقد أصالة كان الشعر الجاهلي يمتاز بها، وقد أضاف إليها أناقة الشعر المحدث آنذاك.
تتجلّى في ديوانه الشعري ثقافته العباسية بجذورها العربية الإسلامية، حيث استطاع أن يخلّد الإنتصارات التي كانت تتوالى آنئذٍ، فإذا بالأحداث تبدو زغرودة النصر، حيَّة مفعمة بالحركة التي برع بتصويرها، وهو يشيد بهؤلاء الأبطال الذين كانوا يخوضون تلك المعارك على تخوم دولة الإسلام مع الفرس ومع الروم، وهو لا يتوانى عن أن يذور بأحد القواد الذي فرّ من المعركة تاركاً جيشه ليلقى الهزيمة.
لذا فالتاريخ الحيّ يمكن أن يعتمد على ما أحياه في تلك القصائد، لأن يعد مؤرخاً لمرحلة من أهم مراحل حياة الأمة الإسلامية ممّا يعني أنه على علم واسع في الحياة العربيّة منذ الجاهلية حتى عصره، وهو بحقّ أستاذ من جاء بعده من الشعراء جميعاً دون إستثناء.
