هذا كتاب يعد من أوائل كتب "بهاء الله" قبل إعلانه رسالته كمؤسس للديانة البهائية، ويعد أيضاً من أهم كتبه في هذه الديانة بعد كتاب الأقدس.
وأوفى تعريف لكتاب الإيقان صدر من يراعة حضرة شوقي أفندي رباني في كتابه باللغة الإنجليزية. God passes by كما يلي: "ومن أبرز الكنوز النفيسة التي ألقى بها بهاء الله المراج كتاب الإيقان الذي نزل في السنوات الأخيرة من هذه الفترة (1278هـ/1862م). في بحر يومين وليلتين ولا أكثر، تحقيقاً لنبوة حضرة الباب الذي نص على أن الموعود سوف يتم نص البيان الفارسي الذي لم يكمل، وإجابة على الأسئلة التي وجهها إلى حضرة بها الله الحاج ميرزا السيد محمد (وهو خال لحضرة الباب).
وهذا الكتاب الذي يبين معالم الخطة الإلهية المخلصة نموذج للنثر الفارسي بأسلوبه الناصح الأصيل، ووضوحه الملحوظ، وتسانده في البحث، وبراعته الملزمة في البلاغة. لذلك فهو يحتل منزلة لا تداينها منزلة التي كتاب آخر من مجموعة الآداب البهائية على الإطلاق باستثناء "hAZKjrBySShref='/itempage.aspx?id=LBb136877&search=books'>الكتاب الأقدس 'كتاب البهائية المقدس'" فهو أقدس كتب حضرة بهاء الله.
