العلاقة بين فهم النص الديني وعملية تطبيقه على الواقع هو ما يدور الحديث عنه في كتاب (العقل الإيماني) للمؤلف حسن إبراهيم أحمد، وذلك انطلاقاً من كون جميع الأديان السماوية كانت لعقود ثورات أصيلة غيرت في حياة الناس نحو الأفضل، ولكن، يتساءل المؤلف: هل بقيت الأديان محافظة ومعبرة في وجودها اليومي، عن تلك الروح التقديمة التي تواكب عملية الخلق والإبداع، وعن تلك الطاقة، بمعنى هل تم تطوير أو تطويع النص لمواكبة تغير الواقع؟ هل بقيت الأديان في حقلها: ناظمة قيم، وحارسة سلوك، أم تعدته إلى غيره؟
هذا السؤال وغيره من إشكاليات العقل الإيماني يناقشها المؤلف من خلال وجهات نظر متعددة ما بين فريق يريد الحفاظ على النص من دون النظر إلى سيرورة الزمن والمشكلات المستجدة، وفريق آخر يتبنى العقل العلمي والنقدي يحاول النظر إلى المستقبل ويفتح الباب واسعاً للمشاركة الخلاّقة في فهم الواقع وتكييف المصلحة مع منطوق النص أو مدلوله.
في المقدمة التي يفتتح بها المؤلف عمله هذا يقول: الدراسة هي دراسة في الواقع، وتحليل للراهن، وليست قراءة في التراث، والحاضر فيها من التراث موظف للإيضاح ولبيان الفكرة، أو لوصل الواقع بجذوره التي دشنها الماضي، إنها قراءة في عقل العامة وسلوكهم في حراكهم اليومي ومعتقداتهم التي صنعتها الأيام مثلما صنعتها النصوص الكبرى، (...) يزيد أن نتجاوز الإعاقة الممتدة التي سببها العقل الإيماني، فأصبحت من مكوناته (...)" من هذه النقطة كان البحث في العقل الإيماني.
