التصوف الإسلامي ينفرد عن سائر مظاهر الفكر الإنسانى بعامة، والإسلامى بخاصة، حيث أن التصوف تجربة ذاتية ومنهجة الذوق.
فالتصوف فى جوهره تجربة روحية تخص الصوفية الذى يعانيها ويكابدها، ومصدر هذه المعاناة إرادة عارمة من الصوفى أن يتصل بالله، ولما كانت هذه الأحوال تخص من يعانيها فضلاً عن أنها لا تخضع لحكم العقل ومقولاته، فإن يحق للصوفية أن يعترضوا على كل من يحوال أن يزن تجاربهم وتعبيراتهم عنها بميزان العقل، لأن العقل وقوانينه مشترك بين الناس جميعاً، أما التجارب الصوفية فلا تخص غيرهم.
وإذا كانت التجربة الصوفية حال ذاتية فإنه يلزم عن ذلك نتيجتان:
1- أن تتفاوت التجارب وفقاً لمقام كل صوفى فى الطريق، ووفقاً للاستعداد الروحى لكل منهم، ومن ثم تختلف تعبيراتهم، وألا تتفق أحوالهم.
2- وإذا كانت النتيجة الأولى هى تفاوت التجارب وفقا لمقام كل صوفي، فإن النتيجة الثانية هى تفاوت أحوال الصوفى الواحد فى أوقات المختلفة وفقاً لاستعداده وحالته النفسية، وترقيه فى الطريق.
وفى هذا الكتاب قمنا بتحقيق رسالة صفى الدين بن ظافر وقد جمع فيها شيئاً كثيراً من أخبار الأولياء الذين رآهم.
